FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We have assembled frequently
asked questions to help you better understand alcohol treatment and
for assisting you in making an informed decision.
Question—What is the best way
to test for alcohol use or abuse?
We have a simple screening form
that takes about five minutes to complete. It is scored 0—40 and the
range measures the level of alcohol use. This form was developed by
the National Alcohol Screening Program, which we participate in each
year.
Question—How long does it take
for the medication to work?
Normally, there is an immediate
positive effect during the first few days of use. After an initial
blood test, patients begin with a half dose of the medication the
first day, and then one per day, until advised by the Doctor for a
different regimen. Four sample blood tests are done during the
treatment period to be sure no adverse reactions have occurred.
Question—How long does
treatment last?
Our individual therapy program can be 12, 20, or 40 weeks. Couples therapy is the same as
individual therapy. We also provide a primary care two week
evaluation that results in a written report that can be given to the
clients family Doctor or other family members.
Question—How about
treatment for drug abuse?
The Addiction Severity Index
is a reliable measure of drug dependence, along with urine
samples.
Question—How much does the
program cost?
Program costs depend on the treatment
plan and the severity of the case. Please call for more
information. Acceptable credit arrangements can be made. If
you have a pharmacy card then you can save on the cost of
medication.
Question—What type of
program do you have for people that are traveling down south or
vacation extensively during the year?
We have
developed an accelerated program lasting 30 or 90-days: In the
case of the 30-day program, patients receive therapy five days
per week for four weeks.
Question—Do you accept
insurance or assignment of benefits?
We do not accept insurance assignment. We recognize the
difficulties encountered by many in dealing with insurance
carriers, especially HMO’s. We will provide you with a receipt
necessary for you to process your insurance benefits.
Question—What if my blood
work indicates elevated enzyme levels which are considered to be
questionable?
We will refund all payments
or if the medical doctor does not recommend treatment. Heavy
drinkers may initially fail the liver enzyme tests, however, if
they reduce their drinking they may be able to pass the test in
a few weeks. This is usually an indication that a detox program
should be initiated.
In-home detox costs vary depending on treatment
protocol recommended by the Doctor.
Question—What if I have
high blood pressure?
There is no contradiction to commonly
used medications for such conditions as high blood pressure,
cardiac problems or diabetes. We will provide you with a list of
medications that are contradicted. Entering the program is
likely to have a positive effect on lowering blood pressure.
Question—How long does
the medication last in the body?
The body metabolizes opioid
antagonists in about 24/36 hours, with few side effects noted.
